HY5WX-51/134 40.5 kV Metal-oxide Surge Arrester
General description of surge arresters
HY5WX-51/134 metal-oxide surge arrester (MOA) uses zinc-oxide varistors (MOV) as the core element; its non-linear V-I characteristics greatly improve the protective performance under steep-front, lightning and switching waves compared with conventional silicon-carbide arresters. The zinc-oxide varistor has good steep-front response, no delay to steep-front voltage, low switching residual voltage and no discharge dispersion, overcoming the shortcomings of silicon-carbide arresters such as high steep-front discharge voltage caused by discharge delay and large dispersion of switching-wave discharge voltage, thus greatly increasing the protection margins under steep-front and switching waves. In terms of insulation coordination, the protection margins under steep-front, lightning and switching waves can be made nearly identical, providing reliable protection for power equipment. Metal-oxide surge arresters can also absorb lightning overvoltage, switching overvoltage and power-frequency temporary overvoltage.
The polymer-housed metal-oxide surge arrester is formed by one-piece silicone-rubber moulding, with good sealing and explosion-proof performance, pollution resistance without cleaning, reduced wet flashover in foggy weather, resistance to electrical erosion and ageing, small size, light weight and impact resistance; it is easy to install and maintain, and is the replacement for porcelain-housed arresters. This model is of line-type construction and is used for overvoltage protection of overhead transmission lines.

Product Overview
With a rated voltage of 51 kV and a lightning impulse residual voltage of 134 kV, this 35 kV line-type arrester is used for overvoltage protection of overhead transmission lines. With high mechanical strength and good anti-pollution performance, it limits lightning overvoltages and protects line insulation equipment for safe operation. The HY5WX-51/134 metal-oxide surge arrester is the 35 kV line-type zinc-oxide surge arrester; its parameters are given in the table below.
