General description of surge arresters
The HY5WS-7.6/30 metal-oxide surge arrester (MOA) uses zinc-oxide varistors (MOV) as the core element; its non-linear V-I characteristics greatly improve the protective performance under steep-front, lightning and switching waves compared with conventional silicon-carbide arresters. The zinc-oxide varistor has good steep-front response, no delay to steep-front voltage, low switching residual voltage and no discharge dispersion, overcoming the shortcomings of silicon-carbide arresters such as high steep-front discharge voltage caused by discharge delay and large dispersion of switching-wave discharge voltage, thus greatly increasing the protection margins under steep-front and switching waves. In terms of insulation coordination, the protection margins under steep-front, lightning and switching waves can be made nearly identical, providing reliable protection for power equipment. Metal-oxide surge arresters can also absorb lightning overvoltage, switching overvoltage and power-frequency temporary overvoltage.
The polymer-housed metal-oxide surge arrester is formed by one-piece silicone-rubber moulding, with good sealing and explosion-proof performance, pollution resistance without cleaning, reduced wet flashover in foggy weather, resistance to electrical erosion and ageing, small size, light weight and impact resistance; it is easy to install and maintain, and is the replacement for porcelain-housed arresters. This model is of porcelain-housed construction and is used for overvoltage protection of distribution systems.

The HY5WS-7.6/30 polymer-housed metal-oxide surge arrester has a rated voltage of 7.6 kV and a lightning impulse residual voltage of 30 kV, and is used for overvoltage protection of 6 kV distribution systems; it limits lightning and switching overvoltages and protects distribution transformers, pole-mounted switches and distribution equipment for safe operation.
