HY5W-27L 27 kV Metal-oxide Surge Arrester
General information on surge arresters (applicable to all models of this series)
The core element of a metal-oxide surge arrester (MOA) is the metal-oxide varistor (MOV), which has non-linear V-I characteristics: no delay to steep-front voltage, low switching residual voltage and no discharge dispersion, so that the protection margins against lightning waves, switching waves and steep-front waves are nearly identical, and it can absorb lightning overvoltage, switching overvoltage and power-frequency temporary overvoltage.
This polymer-housed series is formed by one-piece silicone-rubber moulding, with good sealing, high explosion-proof performance, pollution resistance without cleaning, resistance to electrical erosion and ageing, small size and light weight, and is easy to install and maintain.
Manufacturing standards: GB11032-2000 (eqv IEC 60099-4:1991) Metal-oxide surge arresters without gaps for AC systems; JB/T 8952-2005 Polymer-housed metal-oxide surge arresters without gaps for AC systems.

Product Overview
The HY5W-27L polymer-housed metal-oxide surge arrester is designed for 27 kV traction power supply and mine power supply, with metal-oxide varistors (MOV) as the core element. It features fast steep-front response, good non-linear V-I characteristics and high current-carrying capacity, effectively limiting the overvoltage amplitude and protecting electrified railways, underground mine power supply and traction substations against lightning impulse and switching overvoltages. The product has passed the type tests of the national quality supervision and test centre for insulators and surge arresters, and its parameters comply with international standard IEC 60099-4.
Type Designation
The codes of model HY5W-27L mean: HY = polymer-housed metal-oxide surge arrester; 5 = nominal discharge current 5 kA; W = gapless; 27 = rated voltage of the arrester, 27 kV; L = with disconnector. The HY5W-27L polymer-housed metal-oxide surge arrester has a rated voltage of 27 kV, a continuous operating voltage of not less than 21.9 kV and an 8/20 μs lightning impulse residual voltage of not more than 81 kV, meeting the overvoltage protection requirements of distribution systems at the corresponding voltage level.

Disconnector installation diagram

Time-current characteristic of the disconnector (this model includes a disconnector)
| Current (A) | 800 | 200 | 20 | 5 | 0.5 | 0.05 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Operating time (s) | 0.01-0.02 | 0.02-0.05 | 0.1-0.2 | 0.5~1.0 | 20-50 | 200-500 |
The letter L after the model designation indicates that a disconnector is included: when an abnormal current occurs in the arrester, the disconnector operates automatically according to the table above, removing the damaged arrester from the system and allowing maintenance personnel to replace it in time.
